El Chorro Lakes

Water, Space, Mountains & Open Horizons

The El Chorro Lakes offer a softer contrast to the dramatic vertical cliffs of the Caminito del Rey.

Formed by reservoirs along the Guadalhorce River, near to the white village of Ardales, the lakes create wide expanses of calm, turquoise water surrounded by pine forests and mountain ridges.

It’s a landscape that feels open and expansive – ideal for a relaxed day outdoors.

Located approximately 35 minutes from Finca Gran Cerros, our adults-only rural retreat near Álora, the lakes are easy to combine with other nearby visits or enjoy on their own.

What to Do at the Lakes

The atmosphere here is informal and flexible.

You might choose to:

  • Swim in designated areas

  • Hire kayaks or paddleboards in the summer season

  • Walk gentle lakeside paths

  • Find a quiet spot to sit and read

  • Enjoy a relaxed lunch overlooking the water

There is no fixed way to experience the El Chorro Lakes – it’s a place to shape around your mood.

El Chorro Lakes

Walking & Climbing Nearby

The surrounding area is well known for:

  • Scenic walking routes

  • Rock climbing (particularly popular around El Chorro village)

  • Elevated viewpoints

Even if you’re not planning anything energetic, the sense of scale and space makes the area visually striking.

It’s also a pleasant stop either before or after walking the famous Caminito del Rey.

Eat Like a Local

There are several informal restaurants and cafés around the lakes, in El Chorro village itself and in nearby Ardales.

Dining here tends to be relaxed and unfussy – a simple lunch, fresh fish, grilled meats, and local dishes enjoyed outdoors.

We’re always happy to suggest current favourites, as opening patterns can change seasonally.

Why Guests Enjoy the Lakes

The lakes tend to appeal to guests who:

  • Prefer open space over structured attractions

  • Enjoy the peace of being near water

  • Want a slower outdoor experience

  • Appreciate scenic driving and viewpoints

It’s less about ticking off sights and more about settling into the landscape.

Many guests combine it with a gentle drive through the surrounding countryside before returning to the finca for a quiet evening.

Visiting from Finca Gran Cerros

The El Chorro Lakes are approximately 35 minutes by car from Finca Gran Cerros, making them an easy half-day outing during a stay with us.

They work well as:

  • A relaxed half-day outing

  • A summer swim stop

  • A scenic addition to a Caminito del Rey visit

  • A low-key afternoon in cooler months

The lakes and surrounding countryside also take on a different character outside the summer season. For more ideas, read our guide to visiting inland Andalusia in winter.

Parking is available in designated areas around the reservoirs, though it can be busy in the height of summer.  Just ask if you’d like advice on where to park, swim, or eat, we’re always happy to help.
