Not for the fainthearted! On the side of a 100m deep gorge, this is undoubtedly one of the most breath-taking walking routes in Southern Spain.
The Caminito del Ray, ‘The King’s Path’ gets its name because history has it that in 1921, King Alfonso XIII walked this route when he opened the reservoirs (Lakes at El Chorro), above the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes or ‘Giant’s Gorge’.
Today, the Caminito del Ray is one of Andalusia’s most popular walking routes, and it’s not hard to see why!
The entire route is a 7km linear walk (between Sillion del Rey in the north and El Chorro train station in the south) that takes in spectacular gorges and ravines. There’s a shuttle bus which runs between the entrance and exit as well as a visitor / ticket centre.
This (along with Quadlander Treks’ quad bike tours) is one of our favourite things to do. The walk is gentle and for the most part fairly flat, and the wide boardwalk means that, although it’s high and attached to the cliff face in places, the walk doesn’t feel too frightening!
We can highly recommend doing this if you can fit it into your itinerary.
Tickets for walking the Caminito del Rey cost from €10 per person for general entry, or from €18 per person for a guided walk (offered in Spanish and English). Full safety equipment is provided.
The Caminito del Rey is so popular that tickets need to be bought in advance. Tickets can be bought from tour companies or online on the Caminito del Ray website.
Alternatively, the local train operator, RENFE, offers a special ticket combining train travel from Álora train station to El Chorro station and entry to the Caminito del Rey. It can only be bought on the day of the visit, and can be purchased at Álora station. For more information about the combined ticket, and prices, visit the RENFE website.
Due to the nature of the walk, it is weather dependent and may be closed at short notice during rainy conditions. Thankfully, rainy days are few and far between!
